What Are Meta Titles and Descriptions?

The meta title is the clickable headline of a result in Google. The meta description is the short text under it. Neither the description nor the length of a title is a direct ranking factor, but both decide whether someone clicks your result instead of the one above it.

Writing them well means fitting a keyword, a benefit and a reason to click into a few dozen characters, then doing it again for every page. This product drafts five options of each from different angles, so you choose and adjust instead of starting from nothing.

  • 5 + 5titles and descriptions in every run
  • 50 to 60characters, the title length it aims for
  • 150 to 160characters, the description length it aims for

How It Works

4 steps, and you stay in control of the result.

  1. Enter the topic and keyword

What the page is about and the phrase it should rank for. Add the brand name if you want it in some titles.

  2. Add the page type and URL

Optional. The URL makes the preview show the address as searchers will see it.

  3. Compare the options

Each title and description shows its length in characters and in pixels, and whether it will probably be cut off on desktop or on a phone.

  4. Copy the HTML

Copy the tag for the title and description you chose and paste it into your CMS or template.

What You Get

Five options of each

Five titles and five descriptions per run, each written from a different angle, so you get a range and not five near-copies.

Only options that meet the brief

Each option is checked for length and for the keyword before you see it. Ones that miss are replaced, and if some still cannot be fixed they are shown with the reason.

A search result preview

See the title, address and description laid out as a Google result so you can judge the click appeal.

Keyword checked, not assumed

Every option is tested for the exact keyword, or its words, and tells you whether it sits near the start of the title.

One-click HTML

Copy the title or description as the tag itself, ready to paste.

Your brand and tone

Signed in, your brand name and tone of voice come from your site, so every page sounds like you.

What You Get Back

You give it: Topic "Robots.txt guide", focus keyword "robots.txt", brand "Skymoon".

Meta Generator vs Writing Meta Tags by Hand

One page by hand is easy. A site of a few hundred pages is where it slows down and gets inconsistent.

Where doing it by hand goes wrong

Titles get cut off

A title that runs long is truncated in search, and the part that sells it is often the part that is lost.

Every page reads the same

Under time pressure, descriptions become a copy of the first paragraph or a template with the keyword swapped in.

Duplicates creep in

Reusing a title across pages makes them hard to tell apart in search and shows up as a finding in audits.

Write Meta Tags for Your Next Page

Enter a topic and keyword and compare five titles and five descriptions.

What It Does Not Do, and Its Limits

So you know what to expect before you start.

  • The titles and descriptions are written by AI. They are drafts: read them, and edit before you publish.
  • The pixel widths are estimates. Google does not publish where it cuts titles and descriptions, so the figures used (about 580 pixels for a title, 920 on desktop and 680 on a phone for a description) are the ones widely observed.
  • Google may show a different title or description from the one you set.
  • It writes for one page per run.
  • A visitor gets one free run. After that it costs 2 credits a run.

Who Uses It

  • SEO managersDraft titles and descriptions for a batch of pages, then review and edit.
  • Content writersFinish a page with its meta tags in one sitting.
  • Ecommerce teamsWrite category and product page tags that differ from page to page.
  • AgenciesKeep each client's brand and tone separate while working quickly.

How to Write Meta Tags That Get Clicked

A few rules that hold whatever tool you use.

Lead with the keyword
Put the main phrase near the start of the title so it is visible and clearly relevant.
Treat the length as a guide
Google cuts titles by pixel width, not by characters. About 50 to 60 characters usually fits, but wide letters take more room, so check the preview.
Give a reason to click
A description that promises something specific, such as a guide, a number or a result, beats a summary.
Write each one for its page
Unique titles and descriptions help search engines and people tell your pages apart.
Remember Google may rewrite them
Google sometimes shows different text. A clear, accurate description is still the best way to influence what appears.

Questions, Answered

What is the ideal length for a meta title?

About 50 to 60 characters usually shows in full, but Google measures width in pixels, so wide letters take more room. Use the preview to check how your title looks.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150 to 160 characters. Search results can show more or less depending on the device and the query, so lead with the important part.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. They influence whether people click, and that matters for the traffic you get from the ranking you already have.

Can I rewrite the tags for a page that already exists?

Yes. Enter the page's topic and keyword and compare the new options with what you have now.

What happens when I write again?

You get new options. The ones already shown are passed back so they are not repeated, and the wording is allowed to vary more.

Does it check my own pages?

Signed in, with an audit of your site, each option is compared with the titles and descriptions already on your pages, and flagged if it repeats one. The page you are rewriting is left out of the comparison.

Why five options?

Each is written from a different angle, so you can pick the tone that suits the page. You can combine ideas from two of them.

Will Google use exactly what I write?

Not always. Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions to match the query. Accurate, specific tags make that less likely.

How much does it cost?

Visitors get one free run. After that a run costs 2 credits, and a free account includes 10 credits a month.
